WhatsApp Everything: Panama's Digital Quirks
Part 6 of the 100 Things series: Why Instagram replaces websites and evening walks are a cultural tradition
Daily Life
26. Evening Paseos
The tradition of evening walks with friends and family is deeply embedded in Panamanian culture. As temperatures cool after sunset, people emerge to stroll through neighborhoods, parks, and malecons (waterfront promenades). These walks serve social purposes while providing gentle exercise and community connection.
27. WhatsApp Business Standard
WhatsApp is the default communication method for almost everything in Panama, including formal business interactions. Doctors, lawyers, government officials, and service providers all expect to communicate via this platform. Business cards often list WhatsApp numbers instead of traditional phone numbers or email addresses.
28. Instagram Over Websites
Many Panamanian businesses forego traditional websites in favor of Instagram accounts. Restaurants post their menus, stores showcase inventory, and service providers display their offerings through photo grids and stories. This preference reflects the mobile-first internet usage pattern throughout the country.
29. Digital Payment Revolution
Contactless payment methods have been rapidly adopted throughout Panama. Even small vendors and taxi drivers often accept digital payments through platforms like Yappy (a local service) or international options. This cashless trend accelerated during the pandemic and has transformed everyday transactions.
30. The Tranque Reality
Traffic jams ("tranques") are so pervasive in Panama City that they've spawned their own micro-economy. Vendors walk between stopped cars selling everything from water and snacks to phone chargers and windshield wipers. Locals build extra time into every journey and develop creative alternate routes to navigate the congestion.
WhatsApp is used for everything in Mexico too! I love it.
