Where Time Flows Differently
Part 1 of the 100 Things series: Panama's fascinating culture begins with "Panama Time"
Culture & Lifestyle
1. Panama Time Is Real
The concept of punctuality works differently in Panama. Being 15-30 minutes late to social gatherings is normal and expected, not considered rude. Business meetings might also start later than scheduled, though this is gradually changing in professional settings. Embrace this relaxed attitude toward time as part of the cultural experience.
2. Hojaldras: The Breakfast of Champions
These fried bread pieces are a beloved breakfast staple throughout Panama. Often served with eggs, cheese, or even stewed meat, hojaldras provide a satisfying start to the day. The crispy exterior and soft interior make them irresistible for locals and visitors alike.
3. The Dollar Dominance
Panama uses US dollars as its official currency, which they call "Balboas." This eliminates the need for currency conversion for American visitors and expats. While the paper money is identical to US currency, Panama mints its own coins that are the same size and value as their American counterparts.
4. Direction by Landmark
Without a formal address system, Panamanians give directions using landmarks rather than street names or numbers. You might be told to go "two blocks past the blue church, turn right at the mango tree, and it's the yellow house with the black gate." This system works surprisingly well once you get used to it.
5. No Camo Allowed
Wearing camouflage clothing is strictly prohibited for civilians in Panama. This law extends to accessories like phone cases, bags, or even children's toys with camouflage patterns. The restriction stems from security concerns about impersonating military personnel.
